Police warn public of cash scam

Police are warning the public after a man from Bridgend was duped by a scam which promised him a refund of overdraft charges.
The victim was contacted by a woman who falsely claimed to be from the Ministry of Justice, and was promised a refund of a substantial sum of money if he made a payment of £99 using a Ukash voucher, an international cash payment method.
The man visited a PayPoint to purchase the £99 UKASH voucher and then called the scammer back providing the code for payment.
Having provided the code for the voucher, the victim was advised by the scammer that further payments would be required in order to qualify him for an even larger refund.
The victim lost £2,400 to the scammers as a result.
Investigating officers want to make the public aware of the scam and advise people not to comply with contact from unexpected callers without first verifying the legitimacy of the call.
Anyone who believes they have been a victim of the scam is asked to contact the police on 101.
