Police Special Greg Butler
Greg Butler

Greg Butler is a Police Special. He has been a volunteer for 22 years.   Police Specials are dedicated members of the community who spare a minimum of 16 hours a month to be part of the Neighbourhood team. They have the full powers of a Police Constable and are able to arrest and give evidence in exactly the same way as full time officers. Greg is an aircraft engineer and has provided a service to the community for 22 years. Police Specials offer us not just extra resources but they bring us the skills and abilities from outside industry as well. Greg works on the Merthyr South Neighbourhood team

6pm:- Greg has started his volunteering duties after working during the day. He is going to volunteer for 4 hours at a peak time. Greg is briefed on the PACT priorities for the ward and going to perform duties to address each of them. After speaking to Sgt Michael for a quick briefing he begins his foot patrol in the area.

7pm:- A PACT priority of underage alcohol drinking means that Greg is visiting all off licences to make them aware of the growing public concerns. There is no concerns with the shop photographed.   Our partners in trading standards often run exercises using test purchases of underage people.

7.30pm:- Foot patrols give us the opportunity to engage with our community.   Advice is given on patrol for a question that this lady asked. Greg has some considerable experience and has dealt with a huge number of different incidents.   Greg can come across anything in his four hours from some simple advice to assisting in a major incident.

8.15pm:- A PACT priority for this area is problem parking at this location.   Despite advice and notices some people fail to take notice of the parking restrictions.   Greg is seen here enforcing the law and effectively dealing with a PACT priority. This will be relayed to the next PACT meeting to show how accountable the team is.

8.45pm:- A PACT priority of youths causing annoyance and drinking in the Park area takes Greg into a patrol of this area.   A number of youths were spoken to and advised. These particular youths were not drinking but if they were Greg has the power to confiscate the alcohol.   The parents will also be advised as they are often unaware of the behaviour their children when they leave the house

9.25pm:- Another PACT issue is youth annoyance at the station. Greg patrols the area but it is all quiet at this time.

Greg finally jumps on the train to get back to the station where he debriefs Sgt Michael. Greg can now go home happy that he has provided a huge service to the community.
